Kokoschka Museum Pöchlarn
Start: 7 pm
Accompanying the exhibition Kokoschka | Schiele | Networks and the publication Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka – Networkers and Rivals, published by Hirmer in April 2026, the Kokoschka Museum Pöchlarn invites art historian Patrick Werkner, together with Anna Stuhlpfarrer and Bernadette Reinhold, for a conversation.
Patrick Werkner is an internationally renowned art historian who founded the Oskar Kokoschka Centre at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in 1996 and served as Director of the Institute for Art Collection and Archive there from 2004 to 2018. During this period, he also played a key role in shaping the Oskar Kokoschka Documentation Centre in Pöchlarn. Werkner’s research—particularly on Viennese Modernism—remains highly influential. His teaching at Austrian universities, as well as his appointments as a visiting professor throughout Europe and the United States, has left a lasting impact on several generations of students and scholars. He has also made significant contributions to Vienna’s exhibition landscape as a curator.
Werkner’s publication Physis und Psyche: Der österreichische Frühexpressionismus (1986; English edition, 1993) continues to be regarded as a seminal work in the field. His award-winning research and numerous publications on Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele, including a book published by Stanford University in 1994, remain authoritative and influential to this day.
An event presented by the Oskar Kokoschka Centre and the Kokoschka Museum Pöchlarn.
