Rethinking Feminisms. Past, Present, Future

Call for Papers for Academic Year 2023/24

Lecture Series “Art – Research – Gender”
Lecture Series of the Department of Equality, University of Applied Arts Vienna

Feminism is not a singular concept - and never has been: there is not just one feminism, but a multitude of divergent theoretical and practical approaches. Even today, what is meant by feminism is contested and disputed. This can be seen not least in negotiations about terminology (trans, FLINTA, NB, lesbian, gay), polemical and derogative word creations like ‘genderism’, but also in the dispute about which genealogies find their way into contemporary feminist struggles and thinking. How can we discover new concepts in earlier texts, make older concepts (differently) productive? How do feminist theories correlate with different forms of structural inequality, what are the alliances, intersections, contradictions? Learning from the past is a prerequisite for understanding the present.

This year's lecture series aims to explore feminist debates and practices from different contexts through critical re-readings and re-imaginings. Significance will be given to excluded narratives and invisible protagonists. Questions regarding the possibilities and limits of reactivation, transmission and translation of geographically, historically and culturally different contexts will be examined. Against the background of an increasingly globally networked discourse, special attention will be paid to analyses of concrete economic, social and cultural hegemonies.

By means of lectures and (lecture-)performances from art, science and activism, this lecture series aims to contribute to a (re)location of the past, present and future of feminist critique and theory.

About the Lecture Series:
The lecture series “Art – Research – Gender” will take place at the University for Applied Arts Vienna, and can be completed as an academic course.
Academics, researchers and artists from all disciplines are invited to share their perspectives on the questions mentioned above. We especially like to encourage young academics and researchers to submit abstracts – for example, in the field of their dissertations.

Lecturers will receive a fee of € 300 (VAT included), travel expenses will be covered.

Usually eight lectures are selected per academic year, which all take place on Wednesday evenings at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The duration of the lecture is set at a maximum of 60 minutes. A discussion follows the lecture.
